The breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats provides nutrients for our bodies. The blood carries these nutrients to all the cells of the body where they are used for growth, repair, and proper functioning of our bodies.

Proteins are chains made of subunits called amino acids. Following digestion, individual amino acids enter the blood. Sometimes, portions of proteins are not completely broken down to individual amino acids. In such cases, small chains of amino acids can enter the blood. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose molecules that are used as an energy source. Fats are broken down and used as an energy source and help absorb some type of vitamins.
